We invite groups in the North West to join us for a special day out in Liverpool in 2018 to discover what has made us the leading guided tour company for groups who like their trips to be more about the grey matter than the grey hair. In the company of a top notch Blue Badge Guide we explore Liverpool’s links with China through visits to the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, the Albert Dock on Liverpool Waterfront and the blockbuster Terracotta Army exhibition at The World Museum.

Meet our Blue Badge Guide at The Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight at 10.30am for time to buy morning coffee & biscuits. This beautiful gallery is famous for Pre-Raphaelite paintings bought by Soap King William Lever to appeal to the housewives who bought his products. In the age of new money a fashion for Chinese art coincided with the boom in British manufacture and trade and Lever knew that to own a ‘China’ collection was to display his wealth and erudition. We’ll split your group into two halves; each to explore the Pre-Raphaelites and the world’s finest collection of Wedgwood Jasperware, and each to enjoy a guided tour of the Chinese Rooms.

Chinoiserie began with tea drinking and we find a rich collection of 17th and 18th century Chinese porcelain alongside cloisonné, jade and snuff bottles. You’ll see how Chinese art, including exquisite ceramics of the Han,Tang and Song dynasties, influenced British design and manufacture. The morning tour will give each of your members an entertaining and accessible overview of Chinese art and the story of China through its successive dynasties. This will prepare your group for the afternoon visit to the Terracotta Warriors exhibition.

We tour the idyllic garden village of Port Sunlight and tell the story of how Liverpool became home to the first China Town in Europe forging the strong Chinese links that have brought the Terracotta Army to the city on our way to the Albert Dock on the Liverpool Waterfront for free time to buy lunch.

For over 2000 years an underground army of life-sized terracotta warriors secretly guarded the tomb of China’s First Emperor until a chance discovery unlocked the mysteries of a vanished empire. 180 artefacts including ten warriors and a life size terracotta horse form an unmissable exhibition at The World Museum spanning almost 1,000 years of Chinese history.

You can buy afternoon refreshments before making tracks for home at 4.45pm.
