COLCHESTER & THE NIGHTINGALES
We offer trips to Colchester & the wild beauty of Fingringhoe Wick on the River Colne throughout the year -
We begin with time to buy morning refreshments at 10.30am before exploring the very heart of Colchester. Your expert and friendly Blue Badge Tour Guide will show you the Norman castle built by William the Conqueror on the site of a vast Roman temple that was destroyed by Queen Boudicca and we'll look out towards the old harbour on the River Colne that first attracted the Romans here.
We also see something of the future in the extraordinary shape of Firstsite gallery where modern art meets Roman Mosaic and a grand painting shows Elizabeth I's physician who lived in the town. Do your own thing for lunch or add a group two course lunch with coffee.
We devote the afternoon to Fingringhoe Wick on the magical Colne Estuary where, bucking the national trend, singing nightingales return year after year and belt out their distinctive and spectacular song all day long! The tour guide will make sure you are in the right place to hear the nightingales. But beyond that it is entirely up to you.
There's a visitor centre with cafe so you can stay put and watch the wild world go by or take a short or longer walk to some of the hides.
We’ll head home at 4.45pm.
