In the company of a friendly and informative Blue Badge Guide you’ll explore the beautiful county town of Guildford and its remarkable modern Cathedral and visit Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village - a unique Arts & Crafts gem nestled in the Surrey Hills.
We start at 10.30am with time to buy refreshments in Guildford Cathedral Refectory before a short tour of this striking modern building. Next a town trail of Surrey’s county town. Dickens thought Guildford High Street to be the most beautiful in England. There’s plenty of choice to buy a lunch locally today. I had no idea that here in Surrey, there was a collection of such richness and a story of such depth. Penelope Keith CBE DL
The Victorian artist GF Watts was a member of the Holland Park set alongside Lord Leighton. Advised by his doctors to avoid the London smog he had an Arts & Crafts house built in the Surrey village of Compton as his winter home.
Watts and his artist wife Mary established an artistic community creating local employment through the preservation of traditional craft skills. Watts Chapel is an Arts & Crafts masterpiece - a unique blend of Art Nouveau, Celtic, Romanesque and Egyptian influence. After Watts’ death, Mary Watts constructed the Watts Gallery to display her husband’s artworks. We visit house, chapel and gallery today.
We’ll gather for tea & cake (included) before making tracks for home at 4.45pm.
