This great value five day holiday has a lot going for it. It’s designed for groups who want to really get a flavour of the area they are visiting without walking their feet off. There are two days with a top notch Blue Badge Guide exploring Hadrian’s Wall one day and Durham and the Durham Heritage Coast on the other.
There’s a free day to relax with the option to visit Newcastle plus a visit to Beamish Open Air Museum. And on the way? Well it depends where you are coming from. We’ll work with you to make a good plan. Coming from the South, the Royal Armouries at Leeds is a good pick. It is free to visit and has entertaining daily demonstrations .
Day One Thursday: Break the journey with regular comfort stops and a visit and or stop to buy lunch. Aim to arrive mid to late afternoon with time to settle in before the first of our evening dinners together.
Day Two Friday : With the Blue Badge Tour Guide we explore Hadrian’s Wall with a very scenic drive coupled with visits to Corbridge Roman Town (EH) and Vindolanda where the extraordinary Vindolanda Writing Tablets were discovered. We’ll begin with a Newcastle panoramic coach tour (during which will show you the lie of the land to help you prepare for your optional visit tomorrow) and stop for free time for lunch in Hexham.
Day Three Saturday: Relax at the hotel, swim, read, snooze, get steamy in the sauna or hop on the coach for optional free time in Newcastle today.
Day Four Sunday: With the Blue Badge Tour Guide we visit Durham and the Durham Heritage Coast and Catherine Cookson Country. The Durham visit includes a visit to the Cathedral with the Open Treasures exhibition and the option to stay for Choral Evensong.
Day Five: Check out after breakfast and take the 45 minute drive South to Beamish. This world famous open air museum tells the story of life in the North in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. Costumed folk bring to life the Town, Pit Village, Home Farm and Pockerley Old Hall. You can buy lunch on site and begin your journey home shortly after lunch or to suit.
