THE ROYAL RIVER EXPLORER
In the morning an Eton walking tour or Thames Villages coach tour. In the afternoon a cruise from Windsor past the homes of the rich and famous on the Maidenhead Millionaires' Row to Boulters Lock.
We begin in Dorney at 10.30am to buy morning refreshments in the walled kitchen garden of the manor house. We'll visit Dorney Lake, built for Eton College and used in the 2012 Olympics or the little gem of a church popular with the country, where Kate Middleton's parents tied the knot. Then a walking tour of Eton from the College to the riverside.
Look out for the school boarding houses, signs for Dames, the oldfashioned outfitters where boys are kitted out in Eton dress and, of course, the boys themselves.
For less walking choose the Thames Villages coach tour which will take in Eton, Old Windsor and Datchet as well as stopping at the Windsor Farm Shop. Both options end in Windsor to buy lunch.
In the afternoon sit back and relax to enjoy just under two hours of Thames cruise scenes as we head upriver from Windsor, past the island racecourse and through Boveney & Bray Locks. Hear about the turncoat Vicar of Bray and see striking looking Gothic mansion with manicured lawns featured in Hammer House of Horror films. Maidenhead is where the Edwardian Bright Young Things came to mess about in boats.
There's a bar on board serving teas and coffees or a nice glass of wine or gin and tonic for a sunny summer afternoon. We arrive at Boulters Lock at 4.00pm and having had the opportunity to enjoy a cuppa on board you can steal a march on the traffic and head home well ahead of the local rush hour.
