Louis Thacker looked after thousands of our guests in the run up to the London Olympics as landlord of the Pilot Pub near the Millennium Dome. We followed him to the Mad Hatter Hotel in Blackfriars and now we've followed him to Burford in the Cotswolds where we begin our day at 10.30am with morning coffee and cake.

We're coming back for lunch but first a panoramic coach tour of some Cotswolds loveliness including the Barrington's and Rissingtons and Stow-on-the Wold. The beautiful patchwork of fields is not as timeless as it seems - indeed it's probably no more than 150 years old - the sudden creation of the Enclosure Acts. Picture our ancestors, peering out over a landscape much loved by we modern love, fearing that nothing will ever be the same again. It's not just us that fear for the future - nothing is new.

We stop to visit picture postcard Bourton-on-the-Water where little foot bridges cross the willow fringed Windrush before returning to Louis' lovely pub for a lunch of Steak and Ale pie with mash and greens or a vegetable Wellington with new potatoes.

To round off an engaging day out we stroll down the gentle hill into Burford where the magnificent High Street sweeps down to the Windrush through an extraordinary and picturesque collection of buildings including the quirky Tolsey Museum, an early Tudor Market House (closed Mondays).

There's free time to enjoy Burford and find a spot to buy tea before we start heading home at 4.30pm.
